Hungry For Progress - Appetite, Genes and Drugs

Why do we feel hunger, what drives some people to eat to excess and is there anything scientists can do about it? In this film, Wellcome Trust, an independent research-funding charity that aims to improve human and animal health, meets with several experts determined to both understand and control our primal need to eat. One team of researchers is gradually unraveling the genetics of appetite, translating the genetic code into cures for severe obesity. While another team is hunting for a drug that can control appetite, potentially eliminating obesity altogether.

CBS REPORTS: Where America Stands

The statistics are startling. Sixty-seven percent of Americans are now overweight or obese. In the last thirty years, adult obesity rates have ballooned from fifteen percent in 1980 to thirty-four percent in 2006. Meanwhile, rates of obesity among children have more than tripled.

It's a growing problem that CBS News thought was important to highlight in their special series, "Where America Stands." In Seth Doane's report on "The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric," he traveled the country from Connecticut to California and from Texas to Michigan to look at the factors contributing to the epidemic and explore possible solutions. Seth Doane's report canvases the country to gauge the problem and put a human face on the issue.

In the video, Obesity Society member, Dr.Kelly Brownell likens the battle against obesity to the fight against tobacco. While there has been progress made in the fight against tobacco (including taxes, public education, and restrictions on advertising) the fight against obesity continues.

PBS: About Life (Part 2) - Controlling the Boomer Belly

If you're a baby boomer, you are a member of the best-educated, healthiest, most privileged generation in American history. And you're also getting older. But you have zero intention of experiencing what used to be called "the Golden Years" the same way your parents did. No, the generation that came of age in the tumultuous 1960s is in the process of reinventing life after age 50.

Host Robert Lipsyte, an Emmy winner and former New York Times columnist, uses his tough-minded journalistic instincts, ever-ready wit, and very strong opinions to ensure that baby boomers overcome their denial and face facts: the time to do something about age-related issues is right now.

This episode of About Life (Part 2) looks into why getting older and gaining weight seem to go together so easily. Robert Lipsyte hosts a roundtable discussion with the leading professionals in the weight management field. Obesity Society President- Elect, Dr. Jennifer Lovejoy, Vice President, Dr. Patrick O'Neil, and Past President, Dr. Michael Jenson explain how bodies change over time, and what middle age American's can do to lead healthy lifestyles.
