April 2010
From the Section Chair

The Obesity Society's Diversity Section is an outgrowth of the former TOS Women and Minorities Task Force.  The overall goal of the Section is to represent the interests of individuals of diverse backgrounds (including but not limited to: race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity) at all levels of TOS, from Council to representation at the annual meeting. TOS also has a Diversity Committee, which is responsible for developing policy and ensuring representation of individuals of diverse backgrounds (including but not limited to: race, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation and gender identity) at all levels of the Obesity Society-from Council to representation at the annual meeting.

Diversity Committee and Section Activities have overlapped as the Section evolves to become fully operational. Jose Fernandez, who had been serving as chair of the Task Force, provided leadership of the Committee and Section activities during the transition.  I agreed to assume the combined Committee/Section Chair role for 2008-2010, after which the Section will have its own officers (see call for nominations below) and begin to function independently of the Diversity Committee.  Other Diversity Committee members, who are assisting with the development of the Section, are, alphabetically: Jamy Ard, Rector Arya, Diane Berry, Silvia Giraudo, Mary-Ellen Harper, Kathryn Kaiser, and Anne Sumner. The Section had its first official meeting at Obesity 2009 in Washington, DC.  Plans for the Section meeting at Obesity 2010 in San Diego will be forthcoming. Jamy Ard and Kathryn Kaiser are taking the lead in planning the Fall Section meeting.

Call for Nominations

Nominate yourself or a colleague (with their permission)

We need at least 2 nominations for each of the Diversity Section Positions listed below. Nominations will be accepted through Friday, April 30, 2010.  Section voting will be by e-ballot. You must be a section member to nominate someone and to receive the e-ballot.

Chair (1-year term to begin after the 2010 meeting; another year as Past Chair-2 years total)
Chair-Elect (1 year as Vice Chair, 1 year as Chair, 1 year as Past Chair-3 year commitment)
Secretary/Treasurer(2-year term)

NOTE: The Chair and Vice-Chair positions will follow a leadership and continuity ladder so that the Chair becomes Past Chair, the Vice Chair becomes Chair. This will not apply to the Secretary/Treasurer because that would require someone to commit for 4 years, which would be challenging.
