April 2011

From the Diversity Section Leadership Team

How time flies...it's already April and summer is fast approaching. Before long, we will be in Orlando, FL at the 2011 annual meeting. That means the Diversity Section needs to begin preparations for another successful TOS meeting.

As we begin to prepare for the annual meeting, our Section will need to keep our goals for the year in mind. We are making significant progress towards accomplishing the goals that we established for the year. To remind everyone, those goals included the following:

Goal 1: Establish a Diversity Tour and prize

Goal 2: Increase representation of diversity content and membership within TOS

Goal 3: Increasing public engagement and translational research

Below are some updates on specific activities related to these goals. Thanks to those who have volunteered to assist, but we still need help with several things. So, if you want to get involved, contact Jamy Ard to Vounteer!

Diversity Tour

As you may know from the abstract submission process, submitters were given the opportunity to identify if they wanted to be included in the Diversity Tour. Abstracts participating in the Tour will be identified in the abstract supplement with a symbol.  A group of volunteer reviewers from the Diversity Section will identify the best abstract in each of the 4 tracks. The winners will be recognized in the final program. Here are the statistics from the abstract submissions:

Diversity tour abstract totals 456, broken down by the following tracks:

  • Track 1 Metabolism = 87
  • Track 2 Neuroscience = 21
  • Track 3 Intervention = 141
  • Track 4 Population = 207

Call to Action: If you would like to serve as a reviewer of abstracts, please let us know as soon as possible. We have the list of volunteers from the meeting last year as well as those who responded to the previous newsletter. We will be convening a meeting soon to discuss logistics for the reviews which will begin May 2, 2011.

TOS Mentoring Program

Members of the Diversity Committee and Section are working with the TOS staff and other section members to develop a coordinated effort across Sections to have a formalized TOS mentoring program. Watch for future announcements about progress and related events at the next annual meeting to address your requests for mentoring within TOS. We will also be following up with those who have signed up as mentors or mentees at the last annual meeting in San Diego.
