April 2011
Dear Collegues,

Welcome to the Obesity and Cancer Section April 2011 Newsletter!

We have developed the newsletter to keep you up to date on latest happenings within the Section and to promote involvement and collaboration. Please contact us if you have issues you would like to see addressed or materials for Section members you would like to have considered for distribution.

Section Goals and Objectives

We have made progress toward our research, education and outreach goals!

  • We proposed an obesity-cancer session for TOS 2011, however it was not selected for inclusion; < 25% of submitted applications were selected for the program.
  • Several TOS members working in obesity research are involved in development of the ACS guidelines for cancer survivorship that include specific guidance regarding diet and physical activity for weight control. When available we will distribute to the TOS cancer-Obesity interest group members.
  • Select members have had the opportunity to highlight obesity-cancer research at national meetings, including FNCE, ASPO, ASPEN, etc. to increase attention and interest in this important area of research.
  • We have initiated the member highlight section in our newsletter to promote innovative researchers as well as collaboration among researchers in cancer-obesity research.
  • We are developing a listserv to distribute important information to our members regarding cancer-obesity related research.

Call for Nominations: Obesity and Cancer Section Leadership

The Obesity and Cancer Section of the Obesity Society is seeking qualified professionals for the 2011-2012 ballot. Currently we have only one elected position that of Section Chair. However, this year we would like to expand to include both a Chair position (2011-12) and a Chair-elect position (2012-13) to help build momentum through expanded leadership involvement. This position requires a manageable time commitment of 4-6 hours month. The Chair is responsible for communications to membership including development of the quarterly newsletter. In addition, the chair and Chair-elect are expected to develop and submit a concept idea for the annual meeting and to secure speakers for the proposed presentations. The Chair  and Chair-elect will co-lead the annual meeting of the Section at the October annual meeting.

If you are interested in leading the Obesity and Cancer Section please send a brief statement of interest and expertise/qualifications, along with a photo (JPEG format). Nominations will be collated into a single document for distribution on the website and final vote by the membership. Nominations must be received by May 2, 2011 for inclusion on the ballot. Ballots will open for online voting on May 9, 2011.

Please consider running for this important position. We have an exciting group of professionals to move this scientific interest area forward in relation to research, education and advocacy.

Of Member Interest

Transdisciplinary Research on Energetics and Cancer (TREC)

TREC is a special-focus research initiative in cancer and obesity, funded by the National Cancer Institute. This program funds collaborative, transdisciplinary research for selected centers across the U.S. and was developed to answer complex questions regarding the role of obesity in cancer risk, progression and recurrence. The researchers involved included basic bench scientists, biomarker specificists, clinical trialists, epidemiologists as well as community-based interventionists, policy researchers and even those expanding our understanding of genetics, technology or biological pathways and risk for obesity and cancer. The initiative began in 2005; the second cycle of center funding is scheduled to begin in 2011.  The TREC centers are coordinated by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center under the direction of Dr. Marc Thornquist; five additional sites were funded and new sites are expected to become engaged this year as well. For more information and a list of relevant publications, please visit the TREC website at: http://www.compass.fhcrc.org/trec/default.aspx.
