The 2010 Bar-Or Award
 
The Pediatric Obesity Section (POS) of TOS  is delighted to announce the nomination of three distinguished individuals being considered for the 2010 Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research: 
    
  • Dr. Leann Birch, Pennsylvania State University
  • Dr. Aviva Must, Tufts University
  • Dr. Thomas Robinson, Stanford University
The Bar-Or Award was founded in 2007 by the Pediatric Obesity Section of TOS to recognize significant contributions to basic and applied pediatric obesity research that have resulted in major advances in scientific understanding of etiology, prevention, and treatment. 
 
Past recipients of this award include Michael Goran, Melinda Southern, Bill Dietz, and Len Epstein.  This year's award recipient will be announced at the Pediatric Obesity Section meeting to be held during Obesity 2010 in San Diego CA, October 8-12.
POS Elections
 
POS Elections Announcement
 
The Pediatric Obesity Section Council has four open positions. All nominees must be members of the Pediatric Obesity Section of The Obesity Society who regularly attend the annual meeting. Terms begin at Obesity 2010, October 8-12 in San Diego, CA.
 
Nominees will serve to promote the Pediatric Obesity Section mission:
 
  • Promote research, practice, and advocacy related to pediatric obesity
  • Facilitate networking of pediatric obesity researchers and practitioners
  • Serve as liaison to the TOS council
  • Serve as spokesperson on pediatric issues requested to TOS from outside societies, media, foundations, and so forth

Open Positions:
 
One (1) Secretary/Treasurer (1-year term, rotates up to Vice Chair and then Chair of the Pediatric Obesity Section). Responsibilities include liaison with TOS staff to set up conference calls, participate in monthly conference calls, generate ideas for the annual scientific committee, plan and attend section activities at the annual scientific meeting.
 
Two (2) Council members (2-year term). Responsibilities include participating in monthly conference calls, generating ideas for the annual scientific committee, plan and attend section activities at the annual scientific meeting.
 
One (1) Fellow: Student/Postdoc (2-year term). Responsibilities include participating in monthly conference calls, generating ideas for the annual scientific committee, plan and attend section activities at the annual scientific meeting. Represent student/postdoctoral section members.
 
Self-nominations should be submitted by May 1st, 2010 with a CV and a brief 1 paragraph bio of the nominee outlining:
 
  • Background and experience
  • Involvement with the Pediatric Obesity Section
  • Vision for the Pediatric Obesity Section

Example Statement:
"Leslie Poig is an Associate Professor at Harvard University, who does research on community-based interventions to prevent type 2 diabetes in children. She has been a TOS member for 5 years, and a Pediatric Section member for 2 years. She has served as a member of the diversity committee. Her vision includes increasing the prominence of the Pediatric Obesity Section and bringing a prevention focus to the Section"

Annual Section Meeting Report 
 
Annual Section Meeting Report
 
At Obesity 2009, Drs. Michael Goran and Melinda Sothern were awarded the 2009 Oded Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity, and the award was presented by Dr. William H. Dietz.  Dr. Michael Goran presented a lecture, entitled The Future of Pediatric Obesity Research.  After the presentation of the award, the section held a reception in honor of Drs. Michael Goran and Melinda Sothern, hosted by the Washington, DC office of the University of Southern California.
 
The next Pediatric Obesity Section meeting will be held over the noon hour during Obesity 2010 in San Diego CA, Oct 8-12. Details of the time and location will be forthcoming.
 
Call for Nomination
 
Call for Nomination for a New Member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition With Expertise in Preventive Cardiology and/or Obesity
 
The American Academy of Pediatrics has an open call, that we thought TOS members might like to hear about, for the nomination of a new member of the AAP Committee on Nutrition with expertise in preventive cardiology and/or obesity. 
 
**NOTE: Only AAP members can nominate. The person in this position will replace Steve Daniels, MD in this small committee that has significant impact on pediatric nutrition guidelines.

AAP Committee on Nutrition Specific Needs for Member Position:
  • Practicing pediatrician or academician
  • Broad knowledge and clinical experience related to nutrition
  • Special expertise in cardiovascular diseases
  • Significant experience with AAP chapters, national committees, sections, and staff
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Demonstrated scientific writing skills
  • Knowledge of development and review of AAP policy statements, technical/clinical
    reports, and manuals
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond to issues and requests promptly
  • Ability to represent the Academy nationally
  • Familiarity and expertise with relevant government or clinical initiatives regarding
    nutrition
  • Technical experience
