The Obesity Society's Grants Program demonstrates our commitment to promote, reward, and encourage research in the field of obesity, especially in a time when funding may be difficult to achieve. Members of The Obesity Society are encouraged to apply by sending in their Letters of Intent by the Deadline of June 14, 2010. The Obesity Society is pleased to announce the following grant opportunities: Early-Career Research Grants, Nutrisystem, Inc. Research Grant, and GlaxoSmithKline Research Grant. A total of six grants, two each, will be awarded for up to $25,000 each. Below, you'll find the description of each grant, as well as how to apply.

 | Early-Career Research Grants |

The Early-Career Research Grants (formerly, New Investigator Research Grants) recognize new investigators, defined as individuals who have received a doctorate within the past five years and who currently hold full-time, entry-level positions (e.g., post-doctoral fellow, instructor, assistant professor) at an established academic/research institution. Applicants may request up to $25,000.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
- Member of The Obesity Society (domestic and international)
- Junior investigator (less than 5 years post terminal degree) or postdoctoral research fellows with no previous major research funds
- Potential to generate future funding
- Applications from postdoctoral research fellows must have an active mentor who is a member of The Obesity Society

- Describe the scientific project, including AIMS and hypotheses, on a maximum of 1 (one) page on Institutional letterhead, 1 inch margins, font-size no smaller than 11 point

 | GlaxoSmithKline Research Grants |
|  | GlaxoSmithKline Research Grants Two grants will be funded, each award is for $25,000 and may be expended over a period of up to one year. Total funding pool is $50,000. This grant mechanism is available for both clinical and in vitro research. Animal research cannot be supported through this mechanism.
Focus of research proposals: Applications are solicited in one of the following two focus areas:
VISCERAL OBESITY - The relationship of central obesity to metabolic health continues to be an area of active research. Proposals in this area should focus on advancing the knowledge about this link and implications for therapy.
BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE RESEARCH - Successful intervention for weight loss and maintenance require a strong behavioral component. Proposals in this area should focus on the development and/or validation of novel and innovative tools for weight loss and/or maintenance. Proposals exploring how technology drives health behavior change are of special interest.

 | Nurtrisystem, Inc. Research Grants |
|  | Nutrisystem, Inc. Research Grants Nutrisystem, Inc., a leading provider of structured meal programs for weight loss and weight maintenance is pleased to announce new opportunities for investigators interested in performing a clinical study using one of their weight management programs. Nutrisystem Grant Plusfunding of $25,000 each, plus any required quantity of program meals, will be issued for up to two proposals this year. Preference will be given to randomized, controlled studies using the complete Nutrisystem® program(s). Possible study questions to be explored include, but are not limited to: 1) Effects of weight loss using a Nutrisystem program on disease risk or management 2) Effects of weight loss using the Nutrisystem-D plan on Diabetes or Pre-Diabetes 3) Role of Nutrisystem® meal replacements as a weight maintenance aid Please click here for additional information on Nutrisystem® Weight Management Programs.

 | Additional Grant Program Information |
|  | Letters of intent will be submitted for review toThe Obesity Society's Scientific Review Committee. Applicants will be notified July 12, 2010 if they have been invited to submit a full 4-page proposal along with timeline, budget, and biosketches (2 pages maximum) for each investigator. Grant recipients will be announced August 16, 2010. Grant recipients are required to submit a final report including a statement of financial expenditure. There are no indirect costs associated with these grants. Criteria for evaluating applications:
- Responsiveness to the intent of the announcement
- Novelty of the research
- Feasibility of producing meaningful research results within one year of the grant
- Scientific design
- Feasibility of meeting budgetary contraints
- Adequacy of proposed timeline and schedule of deliverables
