I forgot my username or password – what do I do to retrieve them?

Go to and click on the Member Login on the menu bar on the right-hand side. On the login page, choose “Forgot your password?”. This will bring up a window and prompt you to enter your email. An email will be sent to you with your username and password if your email matches the one in your profile. If you don’t receive the email in a few minutes, please check your spam mailbox. 

How do I access the online version of the Journal, Obesity?

Go to and click on the Member Login on the menu bar on the right hand side. Login with your username and password. Once in the database, click on the “Read the Journal” in the bottom box on the right.

How do I update my profile information?

You can log in and click on the “Update My Profile Information” box or using the left navigation list, choose Member Center and My Profile from the fly out menu to the right.

How do I edit my profile to reflect the correct salutation or name?

That has to be done by a TOS Administrator. The only changes a member can make in their profile are the items associated with fill-in blocks. 

How can I make a donation? What are donations used for?

Donations assist us in providing research and travel awards for young investigators and student members. A check or money order can be sent to:

Who qualifies for the student membership discount?

Any undergraduate/graduate student, or postdoctoral associate within three years of graduation and also high school students.

What documents do I need to certify that I am a student?

You will need to provide a letter from your supervisor or mentor, on institutional letterhead, confirming your student status and, thus, eligibility for student membership of The Obesity Society.

If a student needs to register for the Annual Meeting, but does not yet have a student ID (i.e., will be a full time student in the fall but doesn’t have a student ID yet or graduated within the last three years), what else will qualify?

An acceptance letter.

What is the term of membership?

Your membership runs for exactly one year from the date you sign up.

How can I get a copy of an article from Obesity?

You can call our main number (301) 563-6526 and ask for the Editorial Assistant and we will be happy to get you a copy of an article.

Do I have to be registered for the Annual Meeting before you even look at my abstract?

No. Abstracts are submitted by both members and non-members. It is preferred that abstracts that are accepted register for the annual meeting and attend to present their poster in person.

Am I eligible for The Obesity Society’s Early-Career Research Grants?

If you are a TOS member and have received a doctorate within the past five years and currently hold a full-time, entry-level position - e.g., post-doctoral fellow, instructor, assistant professor - at an established academic/research institution are a current member of The Obesity Society, you may apply. You will also need to submit a Student Certification Letter (confirming their postdoctoral status).

When individuals (who) apply for the Early-Career Research Grant, does their PI (principal investigator) have to be a TOS member?

Yes. The PI and mentor are required to be members; co-investigators are not. (See Governance & Executive Assistant for specifics.)

My credit card company called and said I had been charged twice. They shut down my card due to possible fraud. Why is this?

When you submit a membership or renewal application, the credit card company “authorizes" a transaction against the card. If there is available room on the card, the card company will then “capture” the charge. If, however, the transaction is declined for some reason, the authorization will expire, but not before 24 to 48 hours (based on your bank’s time frame). So, it is possible to see two transactions on your activity, but only one of the charges actually gets "captured" and charged to your card.

I am an Emeritus Member and don’t see how to renew my membership?

Since you are in a special class of membership, we take care of your renewal efforts in the home office. If you need TOS staff to update any of your information, please send an email to and we will assist you.
