Egg Nutrition Center Research Grant

Request for Application

The Obesity Society announces a request for proposals in application for a research grant sponsored by the Egg Nutrition Center.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Member of The Obesity Society (domestic or international)
  • All career levels
  • Applications from post-doctoral research fellows must have a mentor who is a current TOS member.

Type of research eligible for award: Studies designed to look at the impact of macronutrient intake (carbs vs. proteins vs. fats) on overweight and obesity in children will be given top priority.

Available funding: One grant will be funded for $40,000 for a period of up to two years.

Focus of research proposals

Potential questions might include, but are not limited to, such topics as:

  • Present macronutrient make-up of diets of obese vs. normal wt. children
  • Impact of high protein diet vs. high carbohydrate diet on body weight and body composition in children
  • Optimal protein intake in children. Present studies (mainly in adults) suggest that consuming 25-30 gms protein per meal is preferable for enhancing muscle protein synthesis and promoting satiety. Is there an optimal range per meal in children?

Application procedure – Two-step review process

The Obesity Society’s Scientific Review Committee will vet all study proposals for scientific merit prior to selecting the grant recipient.

Step 1

  • Prepare a one-page letter of intent cover page (MS Word) downloadable from the link below
  • Describe the scientific project on a maximum of 1 page on Institutional letterhead, 1 inch margins, font-size no smaller than 11 points
  • Prepare an NIH style biosketch of the principal investigator. If the principal investigator is a postdoctoral fellow, the biosketch of the mentor should also be included.
  • Files (MS Word) are downloadable from the link below

o 2013 Egg Nutrition LOI Cover Page

o TOS Biosketch (PI and postdoctoral mentor, if applicable)

Please create one PDF of the above listed documents with the file name: LASTNAME-2013EGG-LOI, then CLICK HERE to submit by Monday, July 8, 2013 @ 11:59pm Eastern Time. The PI may only submit ONE application for this grant opportunity.

Step 2

Successful applicants will be announced on August 16, 2013 and will be invited to submit a Proposal of no more than 4 pages (plus one page for budget and justification, plus biosketch pages) by September 20, 2013. The application should contain the following sections:

  • Background and Relevance
  • Research Design
  • Methods
  • Timeline and Schedule of Deliverables
  • Budget and Budget Justification
  • Biosketch (2 page maximum) for each Investigator

Announcement of award

Grant recipient will be notified by October 21, 2013 and announced thereafter up to and at the TOS Annual Conference, Obesity Week, November 11-16, 2013.

Applications scored on the following criteria:

  • Responsiveness to the intent of the announcement
  • Novelty of the research
  • Feasibility of producing meaningful research results within two years of the award
  • Scientific design
  • Feasibility of meeting budgetary constraints
  • Adequacy of proposed timeline and schedule of deliverables
