Objectives

The postdoctoral program is intended to enhance the capacity of the Canadian health research community in terms of highly skilled and qualified researchers in obesity research and to enrich established research teams devoted to the etiology, sequelae and treatment of obesity.

Description

Fellowships provide support for highly qualified candidates around one of the following themes and leaders:

Adipose Tissue and Adipokines in Obesity
Liver and Lipoprotein Metabolism in Obesity
Metabolic Syndrome and Visceral Obesity
Behaviour and Obesity
Type 2 Diabetes and Insulin Resistance
Genetics and Obesity
Obesity-Related Complications of Aging
Heart and Obesity
Neurobiology of Obesity
Nutrition, Exercise and Obesity
Environmental and Population-based ObesityPrevention
Environmental Determinants of Childhood Obesity

Eligibility Requirements

1. The program is open in priority to Canadians citizens, but also to candidates from other countries.
2. Candidates must hold, or be completing a PhD or a health professional degree (MD or equivalent).
3. Candidates with more than five (5) years of post-PhD research training by the competition deadline are not eligible to apply for this award.
4. Candidates must contact one of the theme leaders

:  Between Jan 2010 and Sept 2010

$40,000/year for 2 years


How to Apply:

A complete application consists of:

  1. A cover letter describing the applicant's interest in obesity research and the research area in which he/she intends to work.
  2. A curriculum vitae (CV) including a list of publications
  3. Official transcripts of the candidate's graduate and/or health professional training, including proof of degrees completed.
  4. Three assessments from persons under whom the candidate has trained who have had a good opportunity to assess the candidate's potential for research.
  5. A letter of support from the applicant's intended supervisor (see above for the list of themes and leaders) accompanied by an outline of the research program proposed.

Review Procedures and Selection Criteria

A selection committee will review applications and recommend the applicants it considers to have the best qualifications.

The selection committee will evaluate and select applicants for postdoctoral fellowships according to the criteria in the following categories:

  • Research ability or potential
  • Academic excellence
  • Communication skills
  • Previous Research Training Environment
