Position Available

Assistant Professor

University of Massachusetts, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, Deparment of Exercise and Health Sciences

Boston, MA

(posted 12/16/2009)

The Department of Exercise and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Boston (http://www.cnhs.umb.edu/) invites applications and nominations for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department is rapidly expanding its academic programs consisting of an exciting curriculum and a growing interdisciplinary team of faculty researchers. We are seeking candidates with expertise that can complement our faculty’s teaching and research in the areas that include, but are not limited to: physical activity and health; weight management and obesity prevention/treatment; conditioning for sports performance; and health behavior change. Examples of current faculty research areas include using technologies such as interactive video games and innovative strategies to reduce obesity, inactivity, and other chronic health concerns in children and teens; physical activity measurement across the age spectrum; and physical activity and nutrition interventions in individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The Department of Exercise and Health Sciences within the College of Nursing and Health Sciences can offer opportunities for internal and external mentoring programs for faculty. Our body of scholarly work on the promotion of physical activity in underserved populations includes current collaborations with major academic and medical institutions in and around Boston including Children’s Hospital Boston, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard School of Public Health, State Department of Public Health, and other community, public, and private health agencies. Research and teaching resources include GoKids Boston, which is a state-of-the-art youth fitness research and training center. We also have a new Exercise Physiology laboratory and equipment including a DEXA, metabolic exercise stress testing, muscle testing dynamometer, and a technologically advanced “smart” classroom within the lab. UMass Boston, the city’s only public university, is a culturally diverse campus that is located adjacent to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library on the Boston Harbor.

Specific requirements for the position are: 1) earned doctorate in exercise science, kinesiology, behavioral health, or related areas; 2) publication record in relevant peer-reviewed journals; 3) success or promise in obtaining extramural funding; and 4) university level teaching experience in the areas of exercise and health sciences or related fields.
