POSITION:      Director of Education

REPORTS TO:  Executive Vice President

SUPERVISES:  Education Coordinator

CLASSIFICATION:  Exempt - Position is a senior-level, full-time position

BACKGROUND:
The Obesity Society is the leading nonprofit, voluntary association whose purpose is to develop, extend and disseminate knowledge in the field of obesity. Composed of approximately 2,000 researchers and clinicians, the Society conducts the largest scientific meeting on obesity each year and is involved in advocacy, education, and expanding public awareness.  The Association has built a reputation as a source of credible, scientific-based information regarding obesity and works to enhance our medical education programs designed to improve the care of obese individuals. These programs are currently targeted toward health care providers.

PURPOSE: 
The Director of Education will oversee the TOS continuing medical educational programs including the development and implementation of the educational program of the annual scientific meeting, the on-line CME programs, coordinate work with other office units, and develop additional services and programs as assigned. The ideal individual will be a creative, self-motivated and highly experienced individual who can work well in an association environment.

DUTIES:

He/she will:

Annual Meeting

  • Serve as liaison to Annual Meeting Program Committee.
  • Manage education programs other than the abstract submission process for the Annual Meeting, capturing content in the online Live Learning Center.
  • Conduct educational program evaluations to validate the effectiveness of the programs.
  • Manage the speaker/chair confirmation process, including notification, verification and communication.
  • Coordinate and provide Communications Director and Managing Editor with accurate program descriptions for all educational sessions.
  • Schedule and facilitate program committee meetings and conference calls for the purpose of selecting speakers.
  • Maintain speaker/chairperson database.
  • Prepare speaker confirmation correspondence, presentation guidelines and instructions pertaining to travel/reimbursement, AV requirements, ACCME disclosures, etc.
  • Prepare and assure compliance with budget for member and non-member faculty participation at Annual Conference.
  • Review and process speaker travel expense reimbursement and speaker honorarium in collaboration with Office Manager and conference management personnel.

Accreditation

  • Manage documentation of CME credits for physicians and continuing education credits for other healthcare specialties for delegates at the Annual Meeting and all other educational programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all ACCME essentials and policies, including reports and renewal self-study documents.
  • Manage compliance with other accreditation agencies to ensure compliance with their CE requirements.

Other Educational Programs

  • Serve as liaison to the Education, Obesity Online Editorial Board and Clinical Committees.
  • Develop and manage the association’s educational programs, including on-line courses, the Internet Slide Library (Obesity Online), CD-ROM based programs, and sponsored symposia.  Answer user inquiries about these programs.
  • Conduct educational program evaluations to validate the effectiveness of the programs.
  • Develop educational program policies related to all educational programs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Participate in the development and management of departmental budget; monitor compliance.
  • Write requests for proposals and manage vendor contracts.
  • Collaborate in the development of grants for commercial support of education programs.
  • Supervise administrative staff and temporary staff for specific projects when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
·     Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred in a health-care related discipline or education;

  • At least three years related experience managing educational programs in an association environment;
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements for the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and other related accreditation agencies;

·     Excellent ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of audiences;

  • Collaborative team player;
  • Experience with non-profit voluntary associations, and working with volunteer committees a plus.
