BACKGROUND:
The Obesity Society is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) professional membership organization. We are the leading scientific society dedicated to the study of obesity. Since 1982, The Obesity Society has been committed to encouraging research on the causes and treatment of obesity, and to keeping the medical community and public informed of new advances.
The Obesity Society's membership reaches more than 2,000 basic and clinical researchers, who have published extensively, and care providers in obesity treatment and prevention.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Editorial Assistant provides assistance to the Managing Editor for activities related to the timely publication of the journal Obesity, and assists with the preparation of other publications prepared by the Obesity Society, such as materials for the annual scientific meeting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review incoming manuscripts to ensure they meet requirements before forwarding for peer-review
- Send review requests to reviewers on behalf of Associate Editors
- Pursue authors for completion of necessary forms required prior to publishing submitted manuscripts
- Upload forms received from authors to the manuscript submission system
- Update information in the manuscript submission system as required
- Provide assistance to authors, editors and reviewers
- Provide assistance in the preparation and editing of the Annual Meeting Abstract Supplement
- Coordinate the quarterly Publications Board meetings and take the meeting minutes
- Help as needed at the Annual Meeting (travel required)
- Assist the Managing Editor as directed
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
- BA/BS degree
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer and web-based programs and applications (including Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat); demonstrated proofreading skills; excellent written and verbal communication skills (e.g., spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, style, etc.) and experience with professional correspondence.
- Must be highly organized, detail oriented, and proactive in solving problems.
- Must be able to work independently and meet deadlines.
