It's with great pleasure that The Obesity Society announces Dr. Richard Bergman, PhD, as our honored presidential keynote speaker at Obesity 2011. Dr. Richard Bergman is an internationally known expert in obesity and diabetes research. He holds an undergraduate degree in Engineering from Case-Western Reserve University and a Ph.D. in Physiology from the University of Pittsburgh. Professor Bergman has contributed important research for over 30 years, and has published over 350 articles. He was the Keck Foundation Chair in Medicine at the University of Southern California, Chairman of Physiology/Biophysics for 15 years. In 2011, Dr. Bergman moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he is founding Director of the Cedars-Sinai Diabetes and Obesity Research Institute. Dr. Bergman holds the Firestein Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research. Dr. Bergman introduced the "minimal model" approach to assessment of metabolic function and risk for disease. The clinical test using this model provides the "disposition index," which is the most powerful predictor of Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Bergman and colleagues introduced a unique model of canine obesity which has examined the inter-relationships between obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes. Dr. Bergman is Editor-in-Chief of the research journal Obesity. Dr. Bergman has won numerous honors for his work, including the "Outstanding Diabetes Investigator (Lilly Award)" from the American Diabetes Association, and the "TOPS" award from the Obesity Society (NAASO). He has delivered numerous prestigious lectureships, including the Mosenthal Lectureship, the Schwartz Lectureship, and the Berson Lectureship. In 2006, Bergman was awarded the Banting Medal from the American Diabetes Association.
