With over 10% of young children in the US ages 2–5 already obese, it is critically important to lay the foundation for healthful diets early in life, when eating habits and food preferences are being formed. New data from the Feeding Infants and Toddlers Study (FITS) will be presented, focusing on how children’s diets evolve and the patterns that develop in the first 4 years of life, including food sources of energy and snacking patterns. Young children’s diets are compared to recommendations: MyPlate and AHA/AAP Dietary Guidelines for Children. Alarming patterns are already being seen in our youngest children, just as they are beginning to eat from the family table. These data highlight some simple dietary changes that could improve children’s diets, and potentially help shape preferences for healthier foods
