The Early-Career Member Committee has planned some exciting and informative events for ObesityWeek 2014. Make sure to look for these events when you register for ObesityWeek and make your travel plans:

TOS Academic Early-Career Workshop: This free, pre-conference workshop provides early-career members in academia, or those considering an academic path, the opportunity to meet, learn from, and mingle with TOS Fellows and other early-career members.

eHealth/mHealth Section Meeting & Reception

We welcome all those with an interest in eHealth/mHealth to join us for the EMS Section Reception. The 2-hour session will include the following:

  • Dr. Bonnie J. Spring, PhD will be presented with the EMS Pioneer Award for Excellence in the Field
  • Dr. Spring will deliver the keynote presentation titled “Technology Supported Obesity Interventions:  How are We Doing?”

Obesity & Cancer Section Meeting, Awards Ceremony & Wine and Cheese Social

Wednesday, Nov. 13

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

The TOS Obesity & Cancer Section welcomes those interested in participating in the Section to the annual business meeting, with guest speakers from the National Cancer Institute, the abstract awards ceremony and a wine and cheese reception. The event will take place during ObesityWeek at the Georgia World Congress Center, Atlanta, GA. Find out more and print out a flyer here.

During the event section leaders will announce the winners of the 1st Annual O&C Abstract Award Competition, generously supported by the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). Posters for recognized abstracts will be on display during the reception.

In additon, the Section will recognize the recipient of the Susan G. Komen Junior Faculty Travel Award for Obesity & Breast Cancer Research, generously supported by Susan G. Komen. Please find application information here. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. ET, Monday, September 16.

Following the awards ceremony, the Section will host a wine and chees social for all attendees, sponsored by DuPont Nutrition & Health and the California Walnut Commission.

Early-Career Investigator Roundtable Breakfast at ObesityWeek

TOS' Early-Career Investigator Committee invites all early-career investigators, including students, trainees, postdoctoral fellows, junior faculty members, and new investigators to our Roundtable Breakfast at ObesityWeek.

The breakfast will provide early-career investigators an opportunity to dine with senior investigators and discuss topics such as: identifying funding opportunities, balancing responsibilities, developing networking strategies, and selecting a next career step. Breakfast is provided free of charge by the Early-Career Investigator Committee. Make sure to reserve a space when you register for ObesityWeek.


Pediatric Obesity Section Meeting & Lunch

The Annual Pediatric Obesity Section Meeting will feature:

  • The Oded Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research presented to Jack A. Yanovski, MD, PhD,Chief of the Section on Growth and Obesity in the Program on Developmental Endocrinology and Genetics at the National Institutes of Health. Following introductory remarks by Dr. Van Hubbard, Dr. Yanovski will give a lecture titled, “Pediatric Obesity: A neuropsychophysioendogenetic perspective."
  • Presentation by Kipling Gallion, MA, Deputy Director of Salud America!
  • Recognition of top posters from the 2013 POS poster competition
  • Review of 2012-2013 section activities and plans for the coming year

Basic Science Section Meeting

Thursday, Nov. 14
11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

All interested individuals are invited to an organizational meeting to discuss the Basic Science Section initiatives in TOS. The goal of this section is to foster interactions amongst scientists of common interests and to promote the needs of basic scientists in TOS. Scientists with interests in metabolism, neuroscience, genetics, immunology, and molecular mechanisms and other related areas are welcome to attend. We will be discussing suggestions for new basic science initiatives for 2013 and 2014. We will also provide poster awards to junior investigators.

We hope you'll join us and let your voice be heard.

Clinical Management Section Announces Two ObesityWeek Events
The Clinical Management section, chaired by Dr. Pankaj Vij, FACP, announces two evening receptions at ObesityWeek:

Clinical Management Reception, Nov. 14, 2013, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. — This reception is open to all TOS members and will feature an educational program by Dr. John Hernreid. During this reception, the 191 physicians who have passed the ABOM examination since it was established will be honored in a lapel pin ceremony. Dr. Robert Kushner, Clinical Director of the Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity and past president of TOS, will present the pins.

Clinical Management ABOM Reception, Nov. 15, 2013, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. — This reception for all ABOM Diplomates will feature a presentation on new and novel therapies by Dr. John Cleek.
