If you haven't already registered for NAASO's 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting, now is the time. Join us in Las Vegas, November 14 -18, for an inspiring and stimulating program. NAASO is pleased to acknowledge Sanofi Synthelabo as the Benefactor of the 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting.

The Entertainment Capital of the World offers something for everyone to enjoy. NAASO has planned several entertainment options for attendees as well.

A mini Film Festival will be held for Monday and Wednesday evenings. Special guest, Carmine Famiglietti, Screenwriter, Producer and Actor, will be on hand to discuss the making of his emotional movie, Lbs., which premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival.

The NAASO Gala is shaping up to be an evening you won't want to miss. Plan your costume now and bring your colleagues.

    A new Day-at-a-Glance is now available online! Use this handy guide to pre-plan your Annual Meeting agenda. Detailed information on scheduled sessions, including speaker information, is also available online in the Final Program Schedule.

    Use these session guides to pick a track, find the key lecture of choice, meet the experts, and schedule time to network with your colleagues.


    Registration Deadlines

    Make your plans to attend the NAASO Annual Scientific Meeting, November 14 - 18, Las Vegas. NAASO Members receive a substantial discount on Annual Meeting Registration. Register by October 22 to take advantage of cost saving rates. The last day to request housing is October 15. Caesar's Palace offers meeting attendees reasonably priced room rates at $169 per night, single or double occupancy.

    NAASO Annual Meeting Events You Won't Want to Miss

    Opening Session and Grand Opening Reception
    The 2004 NAASO Annual Meeting commences with the Opening Session on Sunday, November 14 at 6:00 pm immediately followed by the Grand Opening Reception in the Exhibit Hall. Join NAASO President, Dr. Barbara E. Corkey, PhD, for welcoming remarks. NAASO's special guest is Carmine Famiglietti, Producer, Screenwriter and Actor.
    Mr. Famiglietti will talk about the making of his unique film Lbs.

    NAASO Film Festival
    NAASO will host a mini Film Festival on Monday and Wednesday evening, November 15 and 17 at 7:00 pm. Monday evening will feature the movie Lbs.
    Carmine Famiglietti will make a personal appearance to informally discuss the making of this unique movie which details one man's emotional and physical battle with the addiction of overeating. Famiglietti lost 170 pounds during the making of this film.
    Wednesday evening's screening will feature another hit film. Come join us for a casual, relaxing night at the movies on Monday, Wednesday or both evenings!

    NAASO GALA - Costumes Recommended
    Join us for the NAASO Gala, Tuesday, November 16th, 7:00 pm - midnight. Tickets are $65 per person and can be purchased at the registration desk. Dine and dance the night away with your colleagues and friends and enjoy a musical tribute covering several eras - Las Vegas style! Costumes are highly encouraged! Come dressed to represent your favorite decade of music.

    Meet-the-Professor
    Make plans now to attend a special Meet-the- Professor session designed exclusively for students. Here is an opportunity for informal, face-to-face discussions with key lecture presenters and NAASO leadership. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, November 17, 4:30 - 5:30 PM.

    Special Luncheon Events
    Three special luncheon events will be held simultaneously on Tuesday, November 16 from 12:30 - 1:30 pm.

    • NAASO Task Force on Women and Minorities Roundtable
    • Clinical Management of Obesity Roundtable
    • Graduate Student and Postdoctoral Fellows Roundtable

    More information on each of these events will be available on site at the registration desk.


    Ancillary Activities

    Pre Conference Educational Activity
    Join your colleagues on Sunday, November 14, 2:00 - 5:00 pm for this special pre-conference educational opportunity. Eric Ravussin, PhD co-chairs the program "Development of Anti-Obesity Drugs with Perspectives from Industry, Regulators and Researchers."

    Pediatric Obesity Interest Group (POIG) Symposium
    NAASO's Pediatric Obesity Interest Group (POIG) will host the symposium "National Strategy for Obesity Prevention in Youth: Highlights and Controversies from the Institute of Medicine Report." Plan to attend this special meeting on Sunday, November 14, Noon - 3:30 pm.

    Latin American Program
    Join Spanish speaking colleagues for the III NAASO- FLASO Spanish Symposium on Thursday, November 18, 11:15 am - 12:45 pm. This special joint activity with the Federacion Latinoamericana de Sociedades de Obesidad will be co-chaired by Dr. Silvia Giraudo and Dr. Julio A. Montero. Learn about Latin American advances in obesity research and discuss future trends.

    NAASO encourages and welcomes media participation at our Annual Scientific Meeting. This is a great opportunity for the media to hear innovative, late-breaking science from the foremost obesity experts. Please visit our Media Information Webpage for registration and guidelines.


    Hot Topic Abstract Submission Deadline Near

    NAASO is now accepting Hot Topic Abstracts for presentation at the 2004 Annual Scientific Meeting. Deadline: September 24, 2004, 11:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.
    Submission fee: $50.00.

    Hot Topic Abstracts will only be accepted electronically as an MS Word document attachment.

    Hot Topics represent late breaking science and are based on data not available prior to June 25, 2004. Abstracts are not eligible if the paper has been presented at another national or international meeting or will be published prior to the NAASO Annual Meeting.

    Authors are not required to be members of NAASO. There is no limit to the number of abstracts an author may submit. However, an author of an abstract may appear as the lead author on only two abstract submissions.

    Abstracts must be limited to 2,325 characters (including spaces). The standard for acceptance is much higher for these abstracts than for abstracts submitted prior to June 25. All abstracts submitted to the North American Association for the Study of Obesity are peer-reviewed through a blinded review process. Originality of work, adequacy of data, and clarity of exposition are the determinants in the selection of abstracts. Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters. Abstracts will not be published in the October Obesity Research Annual Meeting Abstract Supplement but may be published at a later date.

    Deadline for submission:
    September 24, 11:00 PM, Eastern.
    Submission fee: $50.00.
    Only the corresponding author can withdraw or receive information on an abstract. Expenses associated with the submission and presentation of the abstract are the responsibility of the presenter. Presenters must pay the registration fee for attendance at the meeting. Presenters will be able to register at pre- registration rates. If you no longer plan to attend the meeting because your abstract was not accepted for presentation, your registration fee will be refunded upon request.
    A letter of notification and appropriate accompanying materials will be mailed only to the Corresponding Author by the middle of October 2004.
