NAASO is now accepting Abstracts for presentation at the 2005 NAASO Annual Scientific Meeting, October 15 - 19, 2005, Vancouver. The abstract submission deadline is May 23, 2005. Please mark this date on your calendar.

NAASO is expecting more than 900 abstract submissions. Submissions of all obesity-related abstracts are encouraged. The Program Planning Committee has been working intently to make this year's abstract submission process effortless. In the column to your right you'll find some new changes and some handy reminders to assist in your abstract submission.

    Plan now to attend NAASO's Annual Scientific Meeting, October 15 -19, 2005, Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre, British Columbia. The Program Committee has been working conscientiously to provide attendees with the most exceptional lectures, sessions and speakers. All areas of the meeting planning process are being fine tuned to ensure NAASO standards of quality and success.

    NAASO Adds New Staff Member
    Stacey Malmgren, CMP joins NAASO as Senior Project Manager-Annual Meeting. In this role she will provide support and direction to the Annual Meeting Program Committee, act as primary contact for speakers, manage subcontractors, and complete the overall planning and implementation of Annual Meetings. She has 15 years of association conference management experience--specializing in city-wide conventions. Stacey can be reached at staceym@naaso.org. Welcome Stacey!

    NAASO expects more than 2,300 attendees to join us in Vancouver. We hope to see you there! Here is some important information to consider before traveling to Canada:

    All Visitors to Canada

  • must be healthy. You might need a doctor's examination
  • must respect Canadian laws;
  • will need a valid passport, proof of who you are or other travel documents;
  • will need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) if you are from one of these countries; and
  • may need a letter of invitation.
  • Check with the Canadian Consulate well in advance of travel. For U.S. citizens, a valid U.S. passport would expedite your return to the U.S.


    Annual Meeting Registration and Housing

    Registration and Housing for the 2005 Annual Meeting is scheduled to open online April 15 . Watch your email for special Registration announcements. Register by June 12 and take advantage of early bird discounts.

    Reminder: NAASO Members recieve substantial discounts on Annual Meeting Registration fees. If you would like to become a NAASO member, or renew your membership, please contact membership@naaso.org or, call Ana Escobar at 301.563.6526.

    The NAASO 2005 Headquarters Hotel is the Pan Pacific Hotel, located atop the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. NAASO has contracted for special rates at 3 other hotels: Fairmont Waterfront Hotel, Hyatt Regency Vancouver and the Renaissance Vancouver Hotel. All hotels are located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, within a short walking distance to the Convention Centre, and near the city's popular attractions.

    Around NAASO and IASO

    IASO Award Nominations
    Nominations are open for the IASO Awards for Scientific Excellence, which will be presented during the ICO2006 in Sydney. Three Awards are available:
    Andr=E9 Mayer Award for outstanding research in the field of obesity by an investigator under the age of 40.
    Wertheimer Award for outstanding basic research contributions to the field of obesity. No age limit.
    Willendorf Award for outstanding clinically orientated research related to obesity. No age limit.
    Each recipient will be invited to present his/her research during a plenary session at the ICO2006, and will receive a commemorative plaque. With the award comes a US$1,000 stipend with travel, accommodation and registration costs and a banquet ticket provided.

    Reminders:

    Deadline: May 23, 11:59 pm EST

    Duality of Interest Forms: Disclosure forms must be submitted from each author listed on the abstract. If one or more authors fail to submit disclosure, the abstract will not be considered for acceptence.

    Notification: Only the corrresponding author will recieve notification of abstract acceptance. Notification will be sent, via e-mail, in mid- July. Please make sure we have your correct e-mail address.

    Allowable characters: Abstracts allow for 2,325 charaters inluding spaces, title, authors, locations, body and summary.

    Figures: Figures count as 320 characters.

    Submission Limits: There is NO limit to the number of abstract submissions. However, an author of an abstract may only appear as lead author on 2 abstract submissions.

    Publishing Date: Abstracts will be published in the Obesity Research September Program Abstract Supplement.

    NAASO Members: Authors are NOT required to be NAASO Members. NAASO membership has no bearing on abstract acceptance.

    Cost: $40 non-refundable fee per abstract submission. Credit cards or checks only (payable to NAASO in US Dollars).

    Withdrawal Deadline: May 23, 2005 - only the corresponding author can withdraw an abstract.

    Registration Fees: Presenters will be able to register for Annual Meeting at pre-registration fees. All expenses associated with submission and presentation are the responsibility of presenter. If your abstract was not accepted, and you no longer plan to attend this meeting, your registration fee will be refunded at your request.
