Abstract submission is now open for the
2006 Annual Scientific Meeting of NAASO, The Obesity Society, to be held
October 20-24, 2006, in Boston, Massachusetts. This year’s new
abstract submission system is fully integrated with the online Learning Center and streamlines the process by which investigators write, create, and
submit their abstracts.

midnight Eastern time on Wednesday, May
24.

NAASO, The Obesity Society, Renews Award Program to Benefit New
Investigators
|
|

The Obesity Society is committed to the
education and training of new investigators. In 2006, the Society is
strengthening this commitment by renewing the New Investigator Awards
Program, which will fund studies proposed by investigators without a
history of prior NIH grant support.
Awards will be provided to four new
investigators, defined as individuals who have received a doctorate in
the past five years and who currently hold full-time, entry-level
positions (e.g., post-doctoral fellow, instructor, or assistant
professor) at established academic/research institutions. Applicants may
request up to $25,000. An initial one-page letter of intent should be
submitted electronically for review by an inter-disciplinary committee.
The deadline for submission of the letter of intent is May 19. For application details,

New Weight Bias Task Force Fact Sheet Available at www.naaso.org

The Weight Bias Task Force has published
a new fact sheet: Obesity, Bias, and Stigmatization.
The fact sheet examines the serious and pervasive social consequences of
being overweight and obese and addresses five key questions:
- What
is weight stigma?
- Where
does weight stigma occur?
- What
are the consequences of weight stigma?
- How
are children affected by weight stigma?
- How
can weight stigma be reduced?

Andrea Dunaif, MD, Charles
F. Kettering Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Chief of
Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Molecular Medicine at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, has received the Berthold Medal from the
German Endocrine Society. She also has received an honorary doctorate
from the University of Athens.

Jean-Pierre Despres,
PhD, Universite
Laval professor and director of research in cardiology at Hopital Laval Research Center in Quebec City, is the scientific director of the new
International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk. The Chair will provide a
platform for integrated research into cardiometabolic risk to define a
set of risk factors and markers that will allow physicians to develop
strategies to better assess and manage this risk. The Chair will hold two
key meetings every year in which leading researchers, clinicians,
scientific associations, and health policy makers will be invited to
discuss the underlying causes of cardiometabolic risk and to agree on
