Dear Society Members,

As we begin the New Year, The Obesity Society is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and productive time ahead. The annual conference program committee, chaired by Dr. Jack Yanovski, met on January 15-16 to plan the scientific sessions for our meeting, which will be held October 24-28, 2009 in Washington, DC. Suggested scientific session education proposals received from our membership were reviewed by the committee for the five designated scientific tracks. Attendees can expect to hear about a wide range of cutting-edge topics spanning from genetic and ingestive behavior research to clinical patient care. We also plan to take advantage of our proximity in Washington, DC by inviting a keynote speaker from the new administration to address a healthcare policy issue regarding obesity. And, of course, the excellence of our meeting would not be complete without the presentation of work by our basic and clinical science investigators. Now is the time to begin planning for your abstract submission to the meeting. The abstract submission site will be open from February 2 through April 17 on our website, www.obesity.org.

Our Obesity Medicine Physician Certification Program initiative has been underway since September, 2008. Task force members, with the aid of external reviewers, have completed work on the knowledge content domains for the examination. The next step in the process is to identify physician volunteers to complete an online survey to assess the importance and time spent in each of the knowledge areas. If you are interested in participating in the online survey, please email Bill Scott, Director of Education, at bscott@obesity.org.

Lastly, I want to bring to your attention two announcements in this newsletter. The first is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that has posted two separate calls for proposals in childhood obesity. The second is a call for applications from the Canadian Obesity Network for their 4th annual obesity summer boot camp. Both of these initiatives provide exciting opportunities for obesity researchers.

RWJF Funding Alert: Healthy Eating Research Calls for Proposals Released

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has posted two separate calls for proposals (CFPs) in the Childhood Obesity program area.

Healthy Eating Research is a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). The program supports research on environmental and policy strategies with strong potential to promote healthy eating among children to prevent childhood obesity, especially among low-income and racial/ethnic populations at highest risk for obesity. Findings will advance RWJF's efforts to reverse the childhood obesity epidemic by 2015.

The two CFPs described below focus on the following four topic areas:

1. Food pricing and economic approaches

2. Food and beverage marketing

3. Improving access to healthy foods in low-income communities

4. Evaluations of promising food-related policy and environmental strategies in settings where children and their families make food choices
