Dear Society Members,
June has been a very busy month. Among the items of note, we bring you details on the changes in our bylaws. As you will see in the article below, the bylaws have now been amended and brought more into line with our strategic plan and provide certain members of council with a defined portfolio or area of responsibility.
The Obesity Society's effort to develop a new certification in obesity medicine for physicians continued in June as a multi-societal steering committee was created and convened its initial meeting. The Obesity Medicine Physician Certification Steering Committee met June 20-21 to confirm the Body of Knowledge and begin formulating the structure of the certification program and exam. Committee members representing nine medical associations and societies affirmed the progress thus far and outlined the path forward for the development of the certification program.
Interviews were held in June to select a new Executive Vice President for the society. Three finalist candidates were interviewed June 17 and an announcement will be forthcoming very soon.
Obesity 2009 is forging ahead. This year we received another record-breaking number of abstracts submitted: 1020 in total. All abstract notifications went out last week.
Indicative of the obesity epidemic around the world, there is also news of a proposal in Europe for a 'European Obesity Day,' which might be of interest to some of you.
Finally, I'd like you to join me in welcoming a new addition to our national staff. Kathie Cleary has joined us as Director of Finance and Administration. Kathie graduated from the University of Maryland with degrees in Accounting and Marketing. She has worked with non-profits for the last 15 years as the Director of Finance & Administration for a bar association and an education association. She most recently worked for a local CPA firm servicing several non-profit clients as an outsourced CFO. Kathie can be reached at kcleary@obesity.org. Sincerely, Robert Kushner, MD President, The Obesity Society |

| Bylaw Revisions
The Bylaws of The Obesity Society have been revised to better serve the membership. Council will now be structured in alignment with the Strategic Plan and membership representation as follows:
- Executive Committee: President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Past-President, Exec VP (serves ex-officio without vote) (voting members n=5).
- Council: Scientific-basic/bench, Scientific-population/epidemiological, Clinical-Research, Clinical-Practice, Advocacy/Public Affairs, IASO Regional Vice-President for North America, and 4 at large members (n=10). Elections shall be structured such that there is at least one representative from Mexico and one representative from Canada on the Council.
With this new structure, direct input and participation by Council members will be greatly expanded in the leadership functions of the Society. The revised Bylaws have been approved by vote of the Fellows of The Obesity Society. Please address any questions or concerns regarding this new structure to Ann Kenworthy, Interim Executive Vice President at: akenworthy@obesity.org. |

Obesity 2009: Record Number of Abstracts Submitted
Congratulations are in order! This year produced a record number of abstract submissions to the society: 1020. A total of 979 abstracts were accepted for presentation at the meeting in October. There will be 155 Oral presentations and 824 Poster presentations.
All reviews are completed and the notifications have been sent out to all those who submitted abstracts for Obesity 2009. Thanks to everyone who participated this year; we look forward to seeing your work in the Fall at Obesity 2009. |
European Obesity Day and Survey
European Obesity Day is an initiative designed to raise awareness in Europe of the needs of overweight and obese people and to ensure recognition of obesity as a chronic disease. It's an initiative that will aim to build on the success of both Belgium and Portugal, where national obesity days are held each year in May. The campaign was initiated by Magor Imre Csibi, Member of European Parliament, the Belgian Obese Patients organization (BOLD), and the National Obesity Forum (NOF) in the UK.
According the World Health Organization (WHO), the statistics of obesity in the whole of Europe, not just the European Union, are staggering, reaching epidemic proportions. In only two decades this problem has trebled, and if no action is taken there will be an estimated 150 million obese adults (20% of the population) and 15 million obese children and adolescents (10% of the population) in the region by next year (2010). In most countries today, between 30% and 80% of adults are overweight.
An online survey has been developed to gauge European opinions on the issue of excess weight and obesity and to help demonstrate to European decision makers that this is an issue that requires action at EU level. The survey marks the one year countdown until the launch of an official European Obesity Day. More information. |
Reminder: Call for Late-Breaking Clinical Trials Abstracts
Symposium Planned for Annual Scientific Meeting
The Obesity Society is planning a Late-Breaking Clinical Trials Symposium at Obesity 2009 to highlight the results of highly significant, multicenter trials of therapeutics, devices, or interventions (e.g., diet, exercise) that will be of broad interest to our membership. The submission site for Late-Breaking Clinical Trials Abstracts will open on June 8 and close on August 31, 2009. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed by the Annual Scientific Meeting Program Committee and up to four abstracts may be selected for presentation.
If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Susan Fried, Annual Scientific Meeting Program Co-Chair, at: skfried@bu.edu |
