Dear Society Members,

It's with great pleasure that I am able to inform you of the selection of Francesca M. Dea as the society's next Executive Vice President. Francesca comes to us with an accomplished background in nonprofit and small business management, strategic planning, and media relations. She will be a great asset to the society as we move forward with our strategic plan and to the team at the national office. Francesca officially joins The Obesity Society on August 3, 2009 and I encourage you to show her a warm welcome.

With the arrival of Francesca Dea as our new EVP, I would like to acknowledge and thank Ann Kenworthy who has served as our interim EVP since October 2008. Ann has done an outstanding job providing stability and leadership to the executive committee, council and staff. We are grateful for her insights and steady hand. We wish her well.

The Obesity Society and The Art of Living With Marilu Henner have entered into a strategic partnership to expand education on obesity.  The Art of Living is working with The Obesity Society to provide viewers across the country with expert-driven information about the global obesity epidemic and bring increased awareness to a condition that affects so many people in the US and throughout the world.

Obesity 2009 Updates: The deadline for submission of Late-Breaking Clinical Trials Abstract submissions has been extended until August 31. We also wanted to remind everyone of the Live Learning Center. As you may know, each year at the annual meeting, we record as many of the sessions as we are able. These sessions are stored online in the Live Learning Center for attendees to access after the meeting. We have provided access to two examples of sessions from the 2008 meeting so that you can try out this feature and familiarize yourselves before the meeting in October. In addition, we are highlighting Obesity 2009 sessions and speakers in each edition of the newsletter as we count down to October.

Last, but not least, I'd like to urge you to register for the meeting now. The Advance Registration rate is valid until September 30. And,  as you'll read below, this year we've created a special 1-Day Pass opportunity, designed exclusively for non-members and regional/local visitors to Washington, DC, who want to attend the meeting on Monday October 26, 2009.
