Steven R. Smith, M.D. received his MD (AWA; University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio – 1988); he completed a residency in internal medicine (Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, 1993), a fellowship in Endocrinology (Ochsner Clinic, 1994), and faculty at the Pennington Center (1994-2010). In 2009, Dr. Smith became Professor at the Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research (Lake Nona Campus) and the founding Scientific Director of the Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes at Florida Hospital (Orlando).
Dr. Smith’s basic science research focuses on adipose tissue biology and skeletal muscle energetics / fatty acid oxidation. His clinical research program focuses on substrate switching, pharmacotherapy of obesity and diabetes, and personalized therapy based on clinical subtypes. He is active in clinical trials of drugs for obesity and diabetes, published over 100 original articles, reviews, and book chapters and serves on the editorial boards of Obesity, the International Journal of Obesity, and Diabetes.
Dr. Smith has been a member of TOS since 1996 and currently serves as councilor at-large (2009-present). Dr. Smith served on the Annual Scientific Program Planning Committee (2007-2009, chaired Track 3 2008-2009) and the Public Affairs Committee (2007-2009, chaired from 2008-2009). He has been an invited speaker, abstract reviewer, and presented numerous papers at our annual meeting.
