Message from the President - July 24, 2013

TOS eNews

Dear Colleagues,

It’s mid-summer and many of us are vacationing, approaching it or wishing for it, which also means thoughts about our November 2013 annual meeting, ObesityWeek, are far from our minds. Not so for your Program Committee, TOS staff, Executive Committee, Council, Committees and Sections, as they have been working hard to make ObesityWeek 2013 (Atlanta) an extraordinary event. The weeklong meeting promises world-class, cutting-edge obesity science. And, as a result of the expanded number of attendees from the two scientific meetings coming together (TOS & ASMBS) there will be greater opportunities to interact and network with obesity researchers, policy experts and industry leaders; more preconference educational opportunities and industry-sponsored events; and our largest exposition hall ever showcasing new and innovative products, services and technologies.

I want to remind those who haven’t yet registered that the early (lower-rate) registration period that opened on April 15 will end in less than three weeks, on Aug. 11. The TOS Scientific Advance Program is complete (you can find it here) and we’ve received 927 abstract submissions by the June 15 TOS abstract submission deadline. These submissions are currently being organized into oral and poster sessions by the members of our Annual Program Committee and are part of the integrated program.

The program now also includes four Corporate-Sponsored Symposia, which will address topics ranging from personalized obesity medicine to practical approaches for patients who are obese and well. Sponsors and supporters include Eisai Inc., Novo Nordisk, Takeda Pharmaceuticals U.S.A., Inc., and VIVUS, Inc. More information is coming soon on ObesityWeek.com.

You may recall that your ObesityWeekSM registration gives you access to the concurrent sessions of the TOS annual scientific program as well as the annual meeting session of ASMBS, our partner in ObesityWeekSM. There are multiple opportunities for ASMBS and TOS attendees to join together in shared events, such as:

  1. Keynote Speaker (Bruce Speigelman) on Wednesday morning, 8:00-9:15am;
  2. Keynote Speaker (Tom Farley) on Thursday morning, 10:30-11:30am;
  3. Welcome Reception at the Georgia Aquarium on Tuesday evening, 7:00-9:00pm; and,
  4. AfterDark Event on Friday night hosted at the Marriott Marquis, 9:00pm-12:00am.

Included in your registration to the Scientific Sessions are: a ticket to the Welcome Reception; a ticket to the AfterDark Event; daily lunches and coffee breaks, and; entrance to the Exhibit Hall, which will be open three full days during the Scientific Sessions (Wednesday, Nov. 13 - Friday, Nov. 15). We have already sold more than 220 exhibit booth spaces (more than 80 percent of our goal!)

In keeping with our past successes, we’ll also be hosting the TOS Social Event (Nov. 14, 8:00 - 11:00 pm). This is a ticketed event, but it will be worth your while. We asked what you’d like to do in an online survey and we got some great feedback and ideas. We're looking into our options to provide the type of event you’ve requested. Stay tuned for more details!

Wishing you a relaxing and enjoyable summer and looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta in November for the inaugural ObesityWeekSM event!

Yours,

Harvey J. Grill
