Atlanta, GA – November 6, 2025 – Marc-André Cornier, MD, FTOS, President of The Obesity Society (TOS), the nation’s leading scientific organization dedicated to advancing the understanding, prevention, and treatment of obesity, released the following statement on the White House’s agreement with major pharmaceutical companies to lower costs and expand access to FDA-approved obesity medications for Medicare beneficiaries.
“The Obesity Society (TOS) welcomes the Administration’s announcement to lower the cost of FDA-approved obesity medications and increase access for individuals living with obesity. While the details of eligibility and implementation will determine the full impact, this initiative represents significant progress toward making evidence-based obesity treatments more accessible and affordable.
The high cost of covering these medications has been a major impediment to Medicare access, and the newly reduced prices will significantly lessen the financial burden per beneficiary. In addition, the opportunity for states to cover the medications through Medicaid at the same price point is a major policy advancement. However, it remains unclear to TOS whether obesity without a related comorbidity will be covered under these plans, and we hope to gain clarification.
TOS encourages the Administration to prioritize policies that expand affordability across public and private insurance programs and reduce out-of-pocket costs for individuals. Even at reduced prices, many Americans will still be unable to afford these medications without adequate insurance coverage.
TOS remains committed to advancing science-driven solutions that improve access, affordability, and equity in obesity care. We will continue working with policymakers, clinicians, and patient advocates to ensure that every individual can benefit from the full spectrum of obesity treatment — including behavioral, nutritional, pharmacological, and surgical interventions.”
